Career pivot

Career pivot

I didn't come into design through the front door. I started my career as a project manager at companies like Keas (a health-tech startup) and Twitter, leading initiatives for User Support teams. I saw where people got stuck and where systems broke down, giving me a close-up view of real user pain points and the operational challenges behind them. Those experiences didn’t just shape how I approach design today—they’re the reason I set out to become a designer in the first place.

Wanting to move from managing projects to designing solutions, I returned to school for a master’s in Human-Centered Design and Engineering (HCDE) at the University of Washington. I honed my user research, interaction design, and visual design skills, leading the design of projects like a mindfulness-based VR tool for teen stress and Favorite Driver, an Uber feature making ride-hailing more predictable. These experiences and the HCDE program, as a whole, gave me the skills and confidence needed to pivot from project manager to designer.

Since graduating, I’ve sharpened my craft and grown into a lead designer, creating intuitive, visually engaging solutions grounded in real user needs. At the City of Seattle, I designed civic products and services to improve how residents experience and interact with local government. Now at Artefact, I partner with mission-driven organizations to design inclusive, human-centered solutions that deliver real impact and drive business growth. My work spans healthcare, social impact, and emerging technology like AI, with partners including the Gates Foundation, Humanitae Advisors, Opportunity International, and SEIU 775.

🔗 Research & Strategy

I start by getting clear on what problem we’re really trying to solve. I work closely with product, design, and engineering partners to define the scope, set measurable outcomes, and make sure we’re focused on what matters most. Through user interviews, surveys, and task analyses, I dig into how people actually think and work, then turn those insights into strategies that shape product direction and design decisions.

🎨 Craft & Execution

From early explorations to polished prototypes, I design end-to-end product experiences across web and mobile. My work blends UX, UI, and visual design craft, using tools like Figma and AI platforms such as Cursor, Lovable, and Bolt to explore ideas quickly. I build and contribute to design systems, creating reusable components and scalable patterns that help teams move faster and maintain consistency. I validate concepts through usability testing and collaborate closely with engineers through implementation, running design reviews and fine-tuning details for a seamless delivery.

🫱🏻‍🫲🏼 Collaboration & Leadership

Good design doesn’t happen in isolation. I bring people together through workshops and co-creation sessions to build alignment and momentum, especially in moments of ambiguity. As a mentor, I help other designers grow their craft while raising the quality bar across my teams. I build trusted relationships with product and engineering partners, establishing clear communication and shared ownership, which is at the heart of my approach.
